Scotland’s Next Growth Opportunity: Turning Innovation into Scale

Scotland has a long-established reputation for innovation. From our universities and research institutions to our entrepreneurs and established industries, we continue to produce new ideas, technologies and businesses with the potential to compete internationally.

The opportunity now is to help more of those businesses achieve genuine scale.

Recent research from Royal Bank of Scotland, using Beauhurst data, identified 1,737 innovative businesses across Scotland, including 367 university spinouts. Collectively, Scotland’s innovative businesses have attracted £6.4 billion in equity investment since 2011.

Those figures underline something we see throughout the Scottish business ecosystem: there is no shortage of innovation or ambition here, and certainly no shortage of investment opportunities in Scotland.

The next step is ensuring more of those ambitious businesses have access to the capital, talent, experience, markets and networks they need to realise their potential.

A Strong Pipeline of Ambitious Businesses

One of Scotland’s strengths is the breadth of innovation taking place across the economy.

Energy transition, life sciences, advanced manufacturing and digital technologies are among the areas where Scottish businesses are successfully commercialising innovation. And these opportunities are not limited to Edinburgh and Glasgow. Innovative businesses can be found across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire, Tayside and the Highlands and Islands, as well as throughout the Central Belt.

There is also encouraging evidence of businesses successfully making the transition from publicly supported innovation towards private investment.

Around 31% of Scottish businesses that have received grant funding have subsequently secured equity investment, compared with 26% across the UK.

But perhaps the most interesting figure for investors is what could come next.

The same research identified 358 innovative Scottish businesses that continue to trade but have not yet secured follow-on investment, achieved an exit or demonstrated a scaleup signal.

For us, that demonstrates something important.

There is a pipeline of Scottish businesses where significant future growth potential could still be unlocked.

Investment opportunities in Scotland

Starting a successful business and scaling one are very different challenges.

As companies grow, what they need changes. Finance is clearly an important part of that journey, but capital alone rarely delivers successful growth.

Scaling businesses need access to experienced leadership, specialist talent and stronger commercial capabilities. For many, the next stage will also mean entering new markets, building international relationships and developing a leadership team capable of operating a much larger organisation.

It’s why we believe the conversation around scaling needs to be broader than simply asking how we fund more businesses.

The Scaling Scotland report reflected this by focusing its recommendations around four areas: business capability, talent, funding, and market expansion and internationalisation. It argues that the progress made developing Scotland’s startup environment now needs to be matched by the conditions that allow more businesses to sustain their growth.

This is also where venture capital investors looking beyond established investment centres in the UK and internationally can make a significant contribution.

Experienced growth investors bring more than capital. They can bring networks, commercial experience, challenge, introductions and lessons learned from supporting other businesses through similar stages of growth.

Getting more of that experience connected to ambitious Scottish businesses can be hugely valuable.

Building on Scotland’s Sector Strengths

We have strong foundations on which to build. The country has internationally recognised capabilities across life sciences, digital health, AI, semiconductors, space technologies, energy transition and advanced engineering, which has established Scotland's pipeline of growth businesses.

Our life sciences ecosystem alone includes more than 725 businesses and higher education organisations and supports more than 44,200 jobs.

What makes the opportunity particularly interesting is that these sectors increasingly overlap.

Our expertise in AI and data is influencing health and life sciences. Engineering capabilities developed through Scotland’s long energy history are helping support the transition to new technologies and sources of energy.

Research taking place within our universities is creating commercial opportunities in areas including robotics, quantum technologies and semiconductors.

It means investors looking beyond individual deals can find businesses emerging from established networks of research, industry expertise and commercial experience.

Making the Connections That Allow Businesses to Scale

Through Invest2Scale, one of the things we want to do is strengthen those connections.

We know the quality and ambition of the businesses being built in Scotland. We also know that successfully scaling more of them will require relationships that extend far beyond Scotland itself.

That means connecting founders with investors, expertise and networks elsewhere in the UK and internationally.

There is already a substantial pipeline of innovation. Scottish businesses are successfully commercialising ideas and attracting private investment, and many are building businesses with ambitions that extend well beyond their domestic market.

The next opportunity is to help more of them make the transition from ambitious growth business to substantial international company.

And for investors looking for the UK’s next generation of growth businesses, we believe Scotland is worth a much closer look.
